“They overcome through sheer exertion of will, shattering the fallacy of the immovable object by becoming the unstoppable force”.

Feb 28

Amongst the early birds to check-in this morning was none other than M2’s female warrior athlete, Chelsea, who clocked in at 12%!!

I look back at all of the hardships and tired days, feelings of exhaustion/soreness/fatigue, and I say to myself, “WOW, what a hard journey!” but my gosh was it worth it! ~Chelsea

Go ladies!! We’re on your team…
“M2fitness Pros & Tight Curves 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge”
December 10th, 2008 to February 28, 2009

Chelsea Cho
Rebecca Lara
 Carol Cristobal

M2’s next generation of female warrior athletes is primed and ready for the challenges ahead. They are about to embark on a 12 week long journey that will change their lives forever. Under the coaching of M2’s very own, Bea Fox, these brave warrior athletes are going to relearn how to breathe, eat and train as they join hundreds of other motivated participants across the nation.

When their journey is complete and all there obstacles bested, you will bear witness to the remarkable transformation these determined women have undergone.

It was not until I was at my lowest (physically and emotionally) that I decided I needed to go back, I needed something to work towards a goal. ~ Carol

RECAP

To give our motivated M2 team members a firm foundation to build upon, and for some added enlightenment we teamed up with “Bodywell Nutrition” during an intense twelve week national body transformation campaign.

By instilling in them the ideals of living and thinking healthier, they will have the tools to help them reach the next level.

Would I be able to do it? … was a question that repeatedly went through my head. ~Rebecca

With just a number of weeks to modify and reverse years of self destructive patterns, the team set off on a real life journey to reach their physical peaks. They would know that there would be sacrifices to make and demands to live up to, doubting their own abilities but fueled with the burning flame of team spirit, these courageous batch of M2 female warrior athletes stepped up to battle for the ultimate challenge.

“I still remember the first day I walked in and how reluctant I felt in terms of believing in myself and really believing that I would succeed and achieve my goals”. ~Chelsea

We didn’t try. We combined each other’s strengths; dove in whole hearted and set the plan into action.

“Then I did the unthinkable… I started doing two hours of Cardio a day and had to get up at 4:45 am to do my first hour of Cardio… by then I knew I had it in me. I was a different person…  I said it… I believed it… and then I just did it.” ~Rebecca

Conditioning the mind is the first step towards completion of a real life goal. We prepared to battle and triumph by any means necessary.

What did it take?

Organization to mentally shift gears and diligently map out a three month strategy with the discipline to stick to a schedule- commitment to follow through, accountability to show up and perform the task each day, and even going as far as changing their immediate surroundings to suit their new lifestyle.

Changing my life style, my priorities, my friends and my mind has at times made me want to break down. ~Rebecca

“Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory.”

On top of that, we organized a proven menu plan along with a series of training methods and systems specific to those of a figure athlete in pre contest mode.

I accomplished the biggest feat of my life and I’ve overcome the one thing in my life that has negatively affected me the most. ~Chelsea

During that 12 week stretch, we forged an alliance. Each team member acted as each other’s conscious holding each accountable for their commitment and performance. We provided a week by week 5-6 day work schedule, starting off with an early- to-rise sixty minute cardio session. The training included a combination of aggressive weight circuits with a mixture of HIIT calisthenics and agility type drills focusing on their individual strengths and weaknesses, followed by another sub to near max PM Cardio session.

On Sundays, we took their routine to the great outdoors for an invigorating and rigorous Super Cardio HIIT obstacle course.  Utilizing a mind-over-matter approach for a support system, the ladies managed to keep each other sharp and focused even during their moments of breakdown.

To achieve any significant success we need to learn from others in order to learn more about ourselves.

If it were not for my fellow competitors and coach, I probably would have quit. ~ Carol

Staying in the moment and not getting too far ahead of themselves proved to be vital in understanding their own strengths and limitations.

We have instilled a variety of healthy values by creating a state of mind that has allowed the team to fulfill their physical transformation and gain new found knowledge, wisdom, understanding, self-awareness, and inner strength to continue to conquer and pursue their successes.

I’m stronger, more confident and I have to admit… I LOOK DAM GOOD! And no one can take that away from me because I earned it! ~Rebecca

Will this be their final destination?

Q&A’s & Results coming up next…

Twelve weeks ago you had an ultimatum… “ALL or nothing”!  I salute you for never giving up the fight…  You are warriors of life.

Although Jon’s training techniques may slightly vary from ours, our language is indistinguishable.

BELIEF by Jon Gilson

As a child, you can do anything.  The future is an unwritten story, unencumbered by the fetters of harsh reality.  Belief is easy to come by, as simple as hearing or seeing.  Potential is infinite, and always given its due.

As we get older, living is no longer an exercise in blind faith.  Doubt creeps in, and skepticism finds its way into our minds. The world gives us our knocks, and with each blow, the bounds of reality narrow.  The vernacular of the impossible impregnates our speech and infects our actions, until we stay with the safe, the pleasant, and the known, afraid to push back against the unfamiliar and the difficult.

This unfortunate evolution leaves us unsure of our abilities, scared to display incompetence and unwilling to attempt the unknown.  Terrified of another hard knock, we display only those traits with known rewards and certain payoffs.  We become small and weak as the chains of doubt weave themselves into our lives.
We cannot conquer frustration by quitting, nor defeat the unknown with doubt.

Every time you grab a barbell or strap on a weight vest, you have the opportunity to reverse this disastrous course.  Instead of succumbing to the gravity of your misgivings, you can take heart in your potential.   You can push back against the pain, secure in the knowledge that every failure can be remedied, every misstep righted.  With a piece of cold rolled steel, you can crush the virus of inadequacy beneath your heel.

We don’t trade in exercise.  We trade in the idea that your potential is exactly what you believe it to be.  Squats, pull-ups and levers are merely tools, a chance to show the world that it is wrong, its lessons flawed.  We cannot conquer frustration by quitting, nor defeat the unknown with doubt.  Meekness can never be rewarded, and with every clash, we scream this message.

I’ve seen athletes perform the impossible, heaving against every fiber of their being, a living war cry in the face of adversity.  They overcome through sheer exertion of will, shattering the fallacy of the immovable object by becoming the unstoppable force.  These athletes come from a thousand different places, unique only in their refusal to accept the world’s false constraints.  They choose to believe in their own capacity for greatness, and they are rewarded.

Belief is a place where the irrational exuberance of childhood finds new life, where the burden of the past is shed in favor of the promise of the future.  Belief is a chance to give all the hard knocks back, to free ourselves to become anything.  Stop wondering if you can, and know that achievement is as simple as trying, over and over again.

INCH BY INCH… STEP BY STEP

I had this queasy feeling in my stomach this morning. One week off from my cardio or training routine can feel like an eternity in my world.

However after all the tremendous physiological and psychological efforts that go into months of a competitive season as a figure athlete, we’re often times left with a mess of adrenal stressors to sort through such as the exhausted feelings that can often leave one feeling lifeless. This in turn can be a detriment to one’s ability to train as hard or follow the required dietary strategies.

I’m often asked “what drives me to do what I do?”  Or better yet, “why do I continue to pursue something that seems so out of reach?” oh, wait! It gets better… at my “age”–ARE YOU KIDDING!? or are you challenging me? Let’s get this straight… first off, I don’t ever see anything as out of my reach and age has nothing to do with desire, commitment, will power and or success. Personally, I find this very easy to answer, but when I pose the question in return it appears to be a difficult one for most to even acknowledge.

This brings me to ask the question, “what compels you to pursue your highest value or interests?”

Extreme is the very nature of the sport- although some may argue it’s not a sport, fitness is a way of life for us and the torment we face when we make the decision to push ourselves  to a higher level-competitive.

Nevertheless, I know that there are only a select few that have the discipline to endure and carry out such an extreme sacrifice- to tough it out and restructure any of our creature comforts requires a tremendous amount of will power.  Enough to scare the masses.

What kind of person would put themselves through such extremes? Well, all walks of life really– building a competitive physique requires similar disciplines from both male and female. How you decide to live your lifestyle is an individual choice. Whether you’re a male or a female, you have to ask yourself, “am I satisfied with how I look and feel, do I settle? or do I want to push beyond my limits?

I’ll take push anyday, but I’ve also chosen this type of lifestyle for many reasons. A person of my character lives for extremes-the edge. I’m also known for having an addictive personality, which requires a disciplined structure. What does that mean? Perhaps a healthier outlet– ultimately, I believe all the women on a competitive circuit participate for various reasons alike.  Improve all aspects of life– health, mental and physical strength.

It is empowering. Nothing- and I mean nothing compares to the mental focus that competition prep requires.

This forces us to stay humble. If you’ve ever lost everything you know what I mean. It reminds one to never forget how from one day you can taste victory and the next defeat. It reminds one to never get lazy– no shortcuts. There is no easy way out. It reminds me that I am determined to succeed by whatever means necessary. Therefore, for me it represents staying committed to my promises. Being a woman of my word. Fighting till the end– whatever it takes.

Looking back at the huge responsibilities of maintaining a stable business, supporting a family and catering to each of our client’s independent needs, I’ve have to say “yes” being a professional is about knowing when to adjust.

One of the toughest decisions for any athlete to do is to sit the game out. Which is why I no longer take anything for granted. I walk away with a new found gratitude each season- becoming more humble, more mindful and more patient than I had been before.

I work hard and train hard, but my job, now, is to stay healthy and in order ensure positive gains sometimes we’re forced to let go and take a few steps back. This applies to anything in life and it’s ok. At this point, my goal now is not focused solely on my competitive career per se, but my willingness to care for others remains a high priority in my life, especially during these uncertain times when I find myself fortunate enough to have these next month’s to continue providing my full support and commitment to our M2 Fitness Pros family and team of ambitious athletes and clients.

When it comes to dedication, our efforts are first and foremost to you.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your continued loyalty. None of my competitive endeavors would have been possible without you.

Over the course of the next few months, I’ll be conducting interviews with the sports most inspirational and fierce competitive female figure athletes, who are willing to share their life stories, pearls of wisdom and business endeavors.

Are you a Sleeping Giant?

“Almost two-thirds of the world’s 946 billionaires made their fortunes from scratch, relying on grit and determination, and not good genes” -Forbes

Unless you exercise the power to choose, your actions and behaviors will only be determined by circumstance or by what others think, say or do.

It took decades of persevering life’s most trying challenges before I finally came to the realization that in order to change my world, there was only one thing to do – make a determined decision. I decided to dream rather than sulk. I decided to take action rather than waste away. Whatever I set my mind to, I did it. It was and still is that simple. Dream BIG and do whatever it takes to make it come alive.

The pivotal moment where my life did a complete 180 came in early 2005, when I convinced myself to step out of my skin “comfort zone” and take life by the horns.

I set a goal for myself and that was to enter the world of fitness competition. Not only would I give my all to mold my being into a worthy candidate, I wanted victory. I set out to conquer and I did. It all started with a few simple words I wrote as a note to myself – “Work hard. Never give up. I will win.”

Pain motivates most than pleasure.

Mind you, it took me decades of self destruction before I could even attempt to rationalize. Lacking faith or moral support, the thought in itself was mortally frightening. Confronting my fears and stepping out of my comfort seemed impossible, but I cast aside my doubts and found a stronger purpose. It would signify my “awakening.” From that point on and with disregard for people’s criticisms, I threw caution to the wind on my quest to carry out the plan.

One year later, I accomplished my goal and took the overall title as an added bonus. After conquering what was once insurmountable, I stood before my peers, a champion. That experience, alone, taught me countless life lessons, fundamental principles and core values.

Life becomes more meaningful when you set out to make progress. You will come to realize that you have more than exceeded your expectations. Looking back, my accomplishments are that much more astonishing-beyond measure. My decision to enter the fitness world brought a great deal of focus and purpose to my life – more than I could ever have imagined. To this day, I still carry that note with me on all my travels. It is a humble reminder of how far I have come.

It takes a great deal of character and strength for one to follow through and to consciously create and choose their own path.

SIX STEPS TO SUCCESS

DESIRE  an intense inclination to want things; the standard model of human motivation is that it takes a desire and a belief
REINFORCE anything following an action which tends to increase the probability of that action occurring
EFFORT exertion of the strength or will; earnest and conscientious activity intended to do or accomplish something
ATTITUDE state of mind or a feeling; an evaluative response, usually contrasted with simple belief by its more direct connection with motivation and behavior
MOTIVATION the reason for the action; that which gives purpose and direction; to do whatever is necessary to bring about an imagined state of affairs

Where do you start? With a burning desire to “DO”. You may not have a course of action yet, but life has a way of guiding you so long as you decide to move forward. Once you begin to develop your new found talent, you will quickly learn that you have underestimated your skills.  Your only limitations are your beliefs.

When you formulate a plan, remember the reason why you are recreating yourself. This reason will serve as fuel, keeping that burning desire to accomplish your goal. Make it powerful. Believe in your dream and see it through.

Plan out your life. Develop a balanced road map, or blueprint if you will, with a high likelihood for success. Once you create it in your mind, lay the bricks down and put it into action. Put it in writing. Start by envisioning the end then announce it to the world.

Reinforce your resolve with positive thinking. “Think it and be it.” Don’t sell yourself short. If your goal is to lose weight, step it up another notch. Dream to be fit. It’s in you.

Bring GOALS alive by putting them out for the world to see.

Every year I force myself to venture out a little bit further. In fact, writing is still one of my biggest obstacles. What comes natural for most is extremely unnatural to me. There are those, who have learned English as their first language and furthered their development through schooling and then there are those who know enough of it to be functional. Despite my shortcomings, this is one element that will not keep me from further reaching my goals.

In order to continually succeed one must keep evolving. In fact, the only way to learn– reach success or accomplish a goal– any goal for that matter, is through failure, practice and repetition.

GO FOR IT! think of the possibilities…

Here are the goals I will set out to accomplish for 2009

What FATS in your diet will actually do to help speed up your fat stripping ability…

To lose fat you have to eat fat. Yes, it’s hard to follow this logic because of the bombardment of false information in many anti-fat campaigns over the years that have a lot of us believing that fat is the cause of our chunkiness. But did you realize that poly and mono unsaturated fats actually speed up our metabolism?

Look at it like a big old fashioned safe that has a three number combination lock that symbolizes your body and in order to open the door to fat loss, the numbers must be correct.  One number of the combination to the right represents Omega-3; one to the left is the Omega-6 and another to the right is the Omega-9. The door only opens to fat loss when all 3 numbers are correct.  Researchers have also found that in 3 different ways, these fats can potentially help burn the fat!

  • When carbs are present or during intense exercise, omega 3 fatty acids aide in burning more fat when they wouldn’t otherwise if they were not part of a regimen of supplementation.
  • Omega 3 will reduce insulin output and it will cause fat to be oxidized faster.
  • Omega 3 also heats the body up more in the cells.

Another big plus with certain fat types is that they provide more power or energy per gram than protein or carbs, aiding in our muscle building routines. More muscle means better fat burning.  Other big pluses include…

  • They prevent heart disease
  • They aide in cancer prevention strategies
  • They make you smarter
  • They make you younger!

If this wasn’t enough evidence, fats also exert powerful effects within the body and have been shown to offer the following benefits as well:

  • They protect the cardiovascular system – strong evidence
  • They improve body composition – strong evidence
  • They alleviate depression – above average evidence
  • They prevent cancers – average evidence
  • They preserve eye health – average evidence
  • They reduce the incidence of aggressive behavior – average evidence
  • They reduce ADHD and ADD symptoms – average evidence

Take home points-Quick start!

  • Have 2-3 salads daily w/ 1-2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil dressing per salad. Avocado is great too!
  • Nut Butters try 1-2 servings/ day of your chosen nut butter; peanut, almond or cashew butter.
  • Have cold water fish like Salmon 2 x /week or fish oil capsules, 3-6 grams daily or 1 TBSL of Flax oil daily.

“Ms. Excalibur 2008 Masters Figure Champ”

It was the grandest, most trying event in NPC history and we pulled through in flying colors! The “Excalibur 2008 Championships” marked the end of another season as figure athletes from all over the country competed one last time in ’08 to qualify for Nationals. 250 of the nation’s brightest up and coming figure athletes came out to compete.

Participating in this 16 hour ordeal was none other than two of our very own M2 Fitness Pros female warrior athletes, Denise Lavia and Tricia Arneson. After sitting through countless hours, it became pretty obvious that the Figure division was by far and away the most popular event amongst the athletes. The line of athletes must have stretched into the hundreds, which only solidified the Figure division’s dominance in these types of events. It wouldn’t surprise me to see these numbers balloon even further at the NPC level.

Quick recap…

0400   Denise and Tricia begin the day with the final Jantana ritual…yes, it’s a must! Skin dye- that is. It can mean the difference between a win and first runner up.

Christine helps Tricia prep twenty four hours prior…

0600   Off to the M2 studio where Tricia met up with the seasoned ‘Dior’ resident make-up artist, Erika Labrie…who is flawlessly amazing!

Erika adds her final touches…

0730  In route to Culver City for registration and athletes meeting

     Denise mugs for the cameras…

Tricia struts…

2400 Final stage presentation…VICTORY… HOME SWEET HOME!!

After months of painstaking preparation, Denise brings a graceful presentation and a tighter package to the stage. Her determination and hard work made her a champion, nominating her height class and taking the title as the “Excalibur 2008 Masters Figure Champ”.  Way to Go D!!

Our rising star, Tricia, took the stage for the very first time.  Her aim was to make it through the four months of contest prep so she could step onto a competition stage… she earned her place in the spotlight! Tricia’s also proved that she has that “it” factor that captures the judges’ attention. She definitely is packing super star potential as she finished in the top ten within the most competitive height class in the figure division – the open “C” class.  Tricia not only brought a natural beauty to the stage, but she also captured the photo lens with her stunning smile.

This sport signifies the makings of a champion inside and out – a true test of character. Becoming a figure athlete is one of the most difficult journeys one can ever embark on. It is a lonely road that only a fellow competitor or athlete can fully comprehend. Subjecting yourself to countless trial and error as you discover every strength and weakness–with every inch of your being, pushing new heights you never thought you could reach. It is the ultimate in personal growth and one powerful experience to boot.

Denise and Tricia are now recovering & replenishing the body’s fuel before they set out to conquer their next plan of attack. Watch for the ladies to return to the stage in 2009… 19 weeks to be exact!

Stay tuned…

I’ve had the pleasure of working with a group of fascinating and talented artists. Over the weekend I met up with the industry’s leader in fitness photography, Paul Buceta. Check out his page and you’ll probably recognize a lot of the fresh faces on a collection of magazine covers. Paul’s work has graced the covers of Playboy, Oxygen, American Curves… the list is endless. He is definitely one of the most recognized photographers in the game, I’m honored to have worked with him.

In route to Paul’s I couldn’t help but notice all the construction… “What a growing city”!

I arrived at Paul’s warehouse mid morning and was immediately greeted at the door by him and the crew- mainly Lori Fabrizio. Aside from being Paul’s right hand, the sexy Lori Fabrizio is every girl’s best friend. She is the artist behind the hair & make up. We got to talk shop while she worked her magic on me and let me tell you – she is absolutely FABULOUS! Don’t let her killer looks fool you. She’s got skills! Lori’s a young entrepreneur and creator of her own cosmetic line, LoriFabrizioCosmetics.com, which I highly endorse.

Ladies, I’ve had every cosmetic line out there so if you prefer the likes of MAC or Bobbi Brown, then you’ll definitely love this one!

Ok so the warehouse was completely hooked up- super cool with the temperature running hot!

Paul is surrounded by a crew of beautiful women (a few Playboy Bunnies too) that help run the business, which I’m sure does wonders for Buceta’s appeal in the industry – smart move there.

It wasn’t all fun and games. We put in a full day’s work and I mean non-stop. This guy doesn’t waste any time – a true pro!

Buceta’s gang was an absolute blast to work and hang with. I can’t wait to come back for another round.
